Online Gun Shop Guide
There are a number of different places for a firearms sale. Many different types of firearm retailers sell their product either online or at their facility. Other locations include the local police or military barracks, sporting goods stores, pawnshops, gun shops, and directly through the manufacturer. There are many different types of firearms for sale including antique firearms, collectible firearms, weapons that can be used for crime, weapons that need to be registered with the government, and firearms that cannot be purchased by minors. If you are interested in purchasing a firearm for sale, it is important to understand your options.
When a firearm is for sale in the United States, it is usually classified according to its classification as a rifle, shotgun, handgun, or sub-machine gun (Sporting Gun). Each of these categories has its own set of restrictions and eligibility criteria. All firearm sales in the United States require that the individual attempting to purchase a firearm undergo a federal firearms licensing course. Individuals who successfully completed this course must then pass a test administered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) to ensure that they are not prohibited from purchasing firearms. If you are attempting to purchase firearm(s) and do not have an active license from the ATF, it may be necessary for you to undergo a criminal background check in order to purchase a firearm.
Some state governments prohibit the transfer or possession of a firearm to individuals under certain classes or categories. This firearm restriction may include owning assault weapons, any firearm in violation of any state law, any assault weapon within the territorial jurisdiction of the U.S., any machine gun, any handgun, and any firearms determined by the state to be especially dangerous to others. While some states allow firearm ownership by any law-abiding citizens, these states also require that individuals register with the state with appropriate documentation. Many states also prohibit firearm sales on school premises, at organized gun shows, and between private party members and those licensed to own firearms.
When purchasing firearms from a licensed dealer, you will typically be required to fill out a Firearms for Sale Avis, which is an application for a Federal Firearms License (if you are from a state without a corresponding firearm license). The Firearms for Sale Avis forms can be accessed at the National Firearms Association website, or via FFL license sellers. The Firearms for Sale Avis asks for information relating to your place of employment, date of birth, address, name, date of marriage or termination, social security number, and other information pertinent to your firearm purchase. Upon completion, the applicant will be asked to sign a Firearms for Sale Avis, as well as provide fingerprints and pass a criminal history check. Once completed, the applicant will be fingerprinted and photographed before receiving their Firearms for Sale permit.
Other items commonly required in online gun shops, include an application for a Federal Firearms License, or the Firearm Application. To receive a Federal Firearms License (also known as an FFL), you must be eighteen years of age or older, not in a criminal court, and have a place of business that accepts payment via credit or debit card. Although no background check is conducted at the time of application, subsequent to receiving your FFL you will need to undergo a background check through the National Instant Background Check System (NICS). This screening is part of the G2A loophole which was closed by congress in 2021.
There is a lot more to buying firearms online, but this was enough to get you started. Before you buy from an online gun shop, make sure you fully understand all of the requirements and laws surrounding the purchase and/or selling of firearms in your particular state. Also remember that, if you ever decide to sell your firearm, you must report it to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), who will perform a background check on you. Lastly, always consult with your local authorities before making any type of firearm transactions.
