Two Guys Who Got traded to Philadelphia From Minnesota in July 2021 Free Agency

The term "Union" refers to a group of contracts that specify the type, length, and value of the players' contracts. In sports, this is often referred to as the "collective bargaining clause." The Union also refers to the monetary compensation the players receive for playing in a league owned by one or more teams. There are three types of UFA: Regular, Restricted, and Exclusive. Each type has different regulations for termination.

Regular UFA's are the most prevalent form of UFA in the NBA. This is usually the minimum contract offered to restricted free agents. A player becomes a unrestricted free agent when their current guaranteed contract expires after either seven or fifteen accrued seasons. Players may sign a one or two year contract with any team they choose, provided they have been playing in the NBA for at least three years. Players who sign a one year contract without entering the NBA Draft are considered a rookie.

Players with contracts within the 750,000 dollar limit are subject to the Luxury Tax. Teams must pay this tax if they offer a Signing Bonus. Players may not sign a contract for the same team for two years during the same year they sign one-year deals. Teams are allowed to exceed the Salary Cap by one or more million dollars for one season, but cannot exceed the Contract Cap for two seasons in the same year.

Michael Redd was a popular free agent available, but was signed three years, five months, and three days before the expiration of his contract. This created a void and led to his departure from the Utah Jazz. The Jazz were rumored to be considering bringing Redd in as a rental player. The Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, and Dallas Mavericks were also interested, but ultimately did not sign him. Redd is now in his third season with the Denver Nuggets.

Nerlens Myron Clark was a second-round pick of the Detroit Pistons in the 2021 NBA draft. He is a decent three-point shooter, a very good rebound player, and a good defender. Unfortunately, he signed a one year deal with the Milwaukee Bucks, which nullified any chance he had of finding a new team. Clark has appeared in just three games this season. His contract doesn't expire until the season is over.

TJ Ford was a second-round pick of the New Jersey Nets out of the University of Alabama. Like Redd, he was signed a one year deal by the Bucks, but instead stayed with the Tide. He has appeared in four games. Touted as an athletic big man out of Alabama, Ford is very much of a size and muscle comparison to centers like Patrick Beverley. He is listed at 6'9" and weighs around 250 pounds.

Rashard Lewis was a second-round pick of the Chicago Bulls out of the University of Kentucky. He is a decent three-point shooter, a decent rebound player, and a strong defender. Lewis was traded to the Orlando Magic in July, signing a one-year contract. He appears to be worth approximately $1.75 million on the market, per sports trading guru Tim Kawakami. Troy Murphy was acquired from the Denver Nuggets in the Luc Richardsson trade. He is a quality three-point shooter, a good ball handler, and a decent rebound player. Murphy is owed approximately $1.75 million on the open market, per Spotrac. This would be a nice return for a player that is fairly talented. Unfortunately, Murphy hasn't developed the same level of consistency that he showed in his tenure with Denver.
